Banff – or the Bernese Alps?

Since we couldn’t find any place to stay at Lake Louise, we drove on to Banff, where there was room for us on a gigantic camping site located in at a lovely place in the woods. In the afternoon, we walked through the tranquil city of Banff, which reminded us very much of Interlaken.

The next morning, we drove to Lake Louise and took our longest hike so far. It first led us to a “Teahouse“, a Swiss-styled mountain hut, where we fortified ourselves with some delicious soup for the second part of our hike. Then we hiked over a small panoramic peak and had a fantastic view of Lake Louise and continued on to Lake Agnes and the second “Teahouse”. The area is remarkably similar to the Swiss alpine scenery and often made us think of the lovely places in our most recent homeland. After hiking down to Lake Louise, we drove off to our camp site early in the evening, a bit powered out from our day (no wonder – we had covered close to 800 meters in altitude and hiked 18km,  with two children on our backs almost the entire time). For a pretty high reservation fee, we had secured a site at the popular and much sought-after Lake Louise Campground. The campground is completely surrounded by an electric fence to keep out bears and other big wild animals. It was somehow like a zoo, just the other way round.

After a morning tour to Moraine Lake, inclusive a hike suitable to the children’s abilities and a long drive, we hit upon the perfect camping site in Revelstoke completely by chance: playground, lake for swimming, warm showers, washing machine, free wireless – and, funnily enough, the owner originally came from near Schwäbisch Hall (very near Max’s home town). This morning, we spontaneously decided to take a day of vacation from traveling: the children can play and have fun on the playground and in the water, and we can finally deal with some things on the computer and update our website. Tomorrow we’ll  travel on towards Vancouver and finally get to the West Coast.
